| The author speaks with a voice of experience on facing depression in ministry. From the author: “After surviving two bouts with stress disease and depression, I set out to discover what was actually going on in my life that was leading me so precariously to the edge of self-destruction. I learned to view depression as a disease inherent in leadership, even more widespread among spiritual leaders. When leadership responsibilities are linked to warfare with the world, the flesh, and the devil, you have the formula for all kinds of stress disease. Battling the Black Dog addresses the causes and cures of stress and depression among spiritual leaders. The key to surviving stress and depression is balance! Balance! The devil hates it, our existence depends upon it, and the Lord modeled it. As we begin to balance nine spiritual disciplines in our lives, we will start to experience the settled calm with which Christ was able to minister.” The author spends a great amount of time dealing with nine spiritual disciplines that will be a significant part of reaching a cure to depression and hindering repeat bouts in the future.
